Center Activities

ABC Match

Cut out red, white, and pink hearts. Then label each heart with an uppercase and a lowercase letter on each half of the hearts. Then have hearts laminated. Cut hearts in half. Children need to match uppercase to lowercase.

Poetry

Write a poem on a piece of tagboard or chart paper. Read the poem together in class often. Then provide paper with the poem also written on the bottom portion of page. Allow children to draw a picture to go with the poem on the top portion of page.

Collect poems from each month to create a poetry book, or put poems in a Memory book for students to take home at end of year.

File Folder Games

Provide file folder games relating to Valentine's Day for children to complete.

An example can be found at this website::

Preschool Printables

Or you can make up one of your own.

Sorting activity

Using candy conversation hearts, provide a sheet with hearts on it. Have children sort hearts into groups by color. To extend the activity provide a sheet to write how many of each color they had, and then graph it onto a bar graph. Compare with other students to see how similar or different their graphs are.

Candy Hearts

Provide a cup of candy hearts and a sheet of blank hearts for students to write messages onto the blank hearts. Students will pick a heart a copy the message onto their sheet. Then color the hearts.

Art Activities

Valentine Wreath

Cut out the center of a large paper plate. Attach red, white, and pink hearts to the ring to make a wreath. I encouraged my students to try and make a pattern with the colors they chose to use.

Heart Creatures

I have done this art project with 1st graders, but not Kindergarten.

Each child cuts out an assortment of large, small and medium sized hearts. Then try to create an animal from the hearts.

I found a similar idea at this website:

Valentine Handprint

Paint the children's hands with pink or red or white paint. Keep their fingers together, and press onto paper in the shape of a heart. Write this poem underneath:
